A Rainy-Day Treat at Yoshino Chaya

Some of the sweetest travel moments happen completely by accident - and our visit to Yoshino Chaya was one of them. It was raining, we were hungry, and Yoshino Chaya happened to be right along our path. So we ducked inside for shelter, expecting a simple snack. Nestled right by the entrance to Chionji Temple, Yoshino Chaya Tea House offers a cozy place to sit back and enjoy classic delights such as Chie no Mochi rice cakes.

Chie no Mochi Rice Cake and Matcha Tea Set

We ordered matcha with mochi desserts, and I couldn’t resist one topped with red bean paste and a scoop of ice cream. The matcha was perfectly balanced - warm, slightly bitter, and calming. The mochi was soft and chewy, while the sweet red bean paste and creamy ice cream made every bite rich and indulgent.

It’s the kind of combination that feels timeless: a little sweet, a little earthy, and entirely comforting. Eating it there, watching the rain, was one of those quiet, cinematic travel moments that stick with you.

What started as a quick escape from the rain turned into a peaceful and memorable pause in our day. Yoshino Chaya wasn’t planned - but it ended up being one of those little travel gems you remember long after the trip ends.

If you ever find yourself in the area, especially on a rainy afternoon, step into Yoshino Chaya. Order something warm, something sweet, and maybe indulge in mochi topped with red bean paste and ice cream.
