Bars, Cafes, Distilleries & More
Here are some great suggestions from my travels over the 10 years. Let's explore delicious drinks and cozy spots that have left a mark on my journey.
310 Amanohashidate
Amanohashidate is peaceful, scenic, and not overflowing with nighttime dining options, so finding a spot like 310 Amanohashidate felt like a little win. It wasn’t on any list we had prepared. It wasn’t planned. It was just right.
Yoshino Chaya
A Rainy-Day Treat at Yoshino Chaya
Some of the sweetest travel moments happen completely by accident - and our visit to Yoshino Chaya was one of them. It was raining, we were hungry, and Yoshino Chaya happened to be right along our path. So we ducked inside for shelter, expecting a simple snack. Nestled right by the entrance to Chionji Temple, Yoshino Chaya Tea House offers a cozy place to sit back and enjoy classic delights such as Chie no Mochi rice cakes.
Tolo Coffee & Bakery
Do you love Ghibli? Do you like coffee and sweets? Then Tolo Coffee & Bakery in Tokyo is the place for you! Nestled in the Setagaya-Daita neighborhood, this café isn’t just about great food and drinks—it's a whole vibe. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels both relaxed and whimsical, thanks to its Studio Ghibli-inspired touches.
Imayo Tsukasa Sake Brewery
Visit Imayo Tsukasa Sake Brewery in Niigata, Japan, a hidden gem renowned for its rich sake culture and beautiful landscapes. Established in 1767, this brewery offers informative tours showcasing the sake-making process and a tasting of their exceptional junmai sake, crafted from high-quality Niigata rice. With over 90 breweries in the area, Niigata is a must-visit for sake enthusiasts and newcomers alike, providing a unique experience in Japan's food culture.
Kirin Fuji Gotemba Distillery
Visit Kirin Fuji Gotemba Distillery, nestled at the base of iconic Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture. Known for its climate similar to Scotland, this distillery offers a fascinating tour where you’ll learn about whisky-making history and equipment. Enjoy 2-3 complimentary tastings of various aged whiskies while gaining insight into flavor profiles and whisky terms. The interactive experience includes a souvenir shop with unique whisky items. A must-see for whisky enthusiasts and anyone looking to explore Japan’s distilling heritage!
The SG Club
The SG Club in Tokyo is a unique multi-floor bar combining Japanese elegance with a vintage 19th-century saloon vibe. Ranked as one of Asia’s top bars, it has two distinct areas: Guzzle upstairs, for a lively atmosphere, and the quieter, more refined Sip downstairs, ideal for savoring cocktails. Signature drinks include the floral Bathtub Yuzu Drop and the dessert-like Drunken Grandma's Apple Pie. The “Whisky Nigiri” offers an umami twist, while Charlie Brown Loves Wagyu combines bourbon with kobe beef and peanut butter. A pricier spot, but absolutely worth visiting!
